Why the choice matters more than the price
A website is usually the first place a customer checks before calling you. A slow, broken or outdated site quietly costs enquiries every day, and a developer who disappears after launch can leave you locked out of your own domain.
The cheapest quotation is rarely the cheapest result. The checklist below helps you compare developers on what actually affects your business: clarity, ownership, quality and support.
The 12-point checklist
- They ask about your business first. A good developer asks who your customers are, what you sell and what a visitor should do on the site before talking about colours or price.
- You get a written scope. The quotation lists the pages, features, number of revision rounds, timeline and what is not included.
- The price is fixed for that scope. Changes outside the scope are quoted before they are made, not added to the final bill.
- The domain is registered in your name. Insist on owning your domain (yourbusiness.com) and having the login. This is the single most important protection you have.
- You own the design and code after final payment. Ask this directly and get it in writing.
- The portfolio works on a phone. Open their past work on your own mobile. If it is slow or awkward, yours will be too.
- They explain technical SEO, but never guarantee rankings. Titles, descriptions, sitemaps, speed and structured data are standard. Nobody can honestly promise first position on Google.
- Speed is taken seriously. Ask how they keep the site fast on mobile data. Heavy templates and many plugins are the usual cause of slow sites.
- Enquiries reach you reliably. Contact forms should arrive in your inbox, and WhatsApp or call buttons should work in one tap.
- There is a plan after launch. Ask who handles security updates, backups and small changes, and what that costs per month.
- Communication is clear. You should know who you are talking to, when they reply, and how you will see progress (a private preview link is ideal).
- Payment is staged. A common, fair structure is an advance to start and the balance on completion, before the site goes live on your domain.
Red flags
- Guaranteed "number one on Google" rankings.
- The domain or hosting registered in the developer's name, not yours.
- No written quotation, or a price that changes after work starts.
- A portfolio made only of template screenshots, or links that no longer work.
- Reviews or client logos that you cannot verify anywhere else.
- Full payment demanded before you have seen any design.
Questions to ask before you pay
- What exactly is included in this price, and what would cost extra?
- How many rounds of changes are included at the design and development stages?
- Will the domain, hosting and code be in my name?
- How will customers contact me through the site, and how will I receive it?
- What happens if I need changes six months after launch?
- Can I see two or three live sites you built, on my phone?
Freelancer, agency or website builder?
Website builders (Wix, Shopify, WordPress templates) can work for very simple needs if you have time to learn them. A freelancer can be affordable but may have limited availability. A small studio or agency usually offers a clearer process, design and development under one roof, and support after launch.
Whichever you choose, the checklist above still applies: written scope, fixed price, and ownership in your name.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a business website cost in India?
As a guide, a simple landing page typically costs ₹12,000–₹25,000, a 5-page business website ₹25,000–₹55,000, and an e-commerce store ₹60,000–₹1,40,000, depending on features and content. Custom web applications cost more. Always compare written scopes, not only totals.
Should my domain be in my name or the developer's name?
Always in your name, with login access you control. The developer can be given access to manage it, but ownership should stay with your business.
Can a developer guarantee first-page Google rankings?
No. A good developer builds strong technical SEO foundations, but rankings depend on competition, content, reviews and time. Treat ranking guarantees as a red flag.
